Bird Watchers Alert - 3rd Sep 2014

rifleman We are excited to see the return of the rare New Zealand bird, The Rifleman, flitting around the flowering cherries at Hereweka Garden.
Imagine our excitement one morning when we woke to find a pair of rifleman birds right outside our bedroom window!
These rare native are the smallest native New Zealand bird.
At our luxury eco accommodation on the Otago Peninsula, Dunedin, we pride ourselves in providing you with a beautiful garden setting which is managed organically and sustainably.
One of the many bonuses of this is that we have seen a huge increase in the number of native birds returning to our valley.
Hereweka is a birds watchers paradise.
Not only do we have all the native birds in our garden and bush but Hoopers Inlet, a 5 minute walk from the Retreat, is home to a large variety of wadding birds.
